A grueling season in the highly competitive National Capital Soccer League prepared the Severna Park U11 Green Shockers boys select soccer team for its end-of-season entry into the Fallston Cup tournament over the weekend of November 18 and 19, at which Severna Park played extremely well, going 3-0-1 and winning the tournament championship.

The team of Aiden Wauters, Alexander Ferguson, Athan Bigelow, Brady Smith, Charlie Samples, Colin Marsh, David Gibb, Gray Gardner, Parker John, Peyton Moore, Tommy Handen, Zachary Simpkins, Jackson Lorsong and Zachary Cielewich tied Westminster United 1-1 in its opening contest, then notched a pair of 1-0 wins over the Old Line Football Club Red Devils and SBFC United to make it to the championship game against Clipper City Football Club. In the final, a second-half penalty kick by Samples gave the team a 1-0 lead, and after CCFC tied the game, a last-minute goal by Lorsong from 30 yards out lifted Severna Park to a 2-1 win and the tournament championship.

Outstanding goalie play by Cielewich, Samples and Gibb was key to the team’s tournament run, as was the stout defense of Ferguson, Marsh, Handen, Smith and Lorsong. The midfielders and strikers — Bigelow, Wauters, Samples, Gardner, Moore, John and Simpkins — contributed to the tournament win with strong offensive play.

The team’s regular season in the NCSL was key to their postseason preparation. The team went 4-5 in its NCSL season, notching key wins against Virginia-based clubs Stafford, Premier Athletic Club, Team America and Alexandria and facing top competition from throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

“We were determined to come out of the Fallston Cup with the championship trophy,” said head coach Bill Samples, who coaches the team with Jeremy Simpkins. “It was something we talked about for two weeks leading up to it. The boys showed their physical and mental toughness in all four games as each was hard fought and could have gone either way. … We played against some very aggressive teams in the regular season, and what we learned against them really showed out on the field during the tournament. We were the more physical team in each game, and I think that pushed us to the championship. Our regular season schedule really prepared us.”

Severna Park’s camaraderie was fortified this season when they played a scrimmage at halftime of a University of Maryland men’s soccer game against Northwestern. The team will play futsal and indoor soccer during the winter season to prepare for the upcoming spring season.

“The boys worked hard all season,” Samples said. “Their dedication to the team and passion for learning the game is awesome to see.”
